Making an Eternal Message with Note4Ever, Ethereum Blockchain and MetaMask
Ethereum Blockchain allows you to write messages in automatic mode. Unlike with Bitcoin, using Ethereum and MetaMask makes Immortal Message writing a matter of several clicks.
All you need is some Ethereum and a MetaMask browser extension. It's a simple and popular Ethereum wallet.
1. Connecting MetaMask to Note4Ever.com
Set up the account first:
1.1. Go to Note4Ever, and navigate to “Ethereum → Write to Mainnet”. For our example, we use one of the Ethereum's testnets called Kovan.
1.2. Hit the “Connect MetaMask” button.
1.3. Pick the right MetaMask account to Connect and press “Next”.
1.4. When MetaMask is connected, pick the right network from the drop-down list near the Fox logo.
1.5. Pick Ethereum Mainnet if you want the message to appear in the original ETH blockchain, not the testnet one.
1.6. You can reload the page and you will immediately see messages left by other people.
2. Sending Out the Immortal Message
Now, let's write your first “Immortal Message”. You will send the transaction from your Ethereum wallet to a smart contract built by the Note4Ever service. In the blockchain, it will live as metadata for a particular financial transaction tied to your MetaMask wallet's Ethereum address.
Sounds difficult, but our service provides you with extremely simple yet powerful interface. Please, perform the following steps:
2.1. Write or Copy and Paste your message in the text field.
2.2. Check the text once more, you won't be able to change it after it appears in the blockchain. If it's OK, hit the “Send Message” button.
2.3. You will see a MetaMask window with transaction details.
2.4. Select the Ethereum network miner fee before hitting “Confirm” (MetaMask will offer optimal fee). In terms of our example, we pick 1 GWEI as a fee for transaction in Kovan testnet. In the Mainnet, the gas price is much higher. For our test message the recommended price was 62 GWEI.
2.5. Keep in mind that the more data you want to encode inside the blocks, the more space the transaction will take. Large transactions mean large network fees. Hit “Confirm” button and wait until the transaction is confirmed by the network.
2.6. Please, note that we charge a service fee of 0.01 ETH per transaction. After you hit the “Confirm” button, the message will show up within few minutes.
At Note4Ever, you could see your message residing as a separate note that contains the text, the time tag, and the transaction ID.
Note4Ever is a truly decentralized application powered by Ethereum blockchain! That's why any of your messages are now available at Note4Ever, msgETH, Etherscan.io, and other Ethereum chain explorers.
2.7. How to check whether a message is indeed in the Ethereum chain? How to find out if it's some local copy on the Note4Ever website or not? As we say in crypto, trust but verify.
Etherscan.io, the famous website for analysts, is reading such messages without any issues. Simply enter the wallet address in a search field and see the “Input Data” for the particular transaction. Don't forget to pick the UTF-8 decoding type!
2.8. Copy the message to clipboard if you need.
Every transaction publicly features an Ethereum address, meaning you can prove that you were the initiator. Moreover, you can pick anonymity, and no one will presume that the address is yours.
3. How a Friend of Yours Will See the Immortal Message?
Please, give the http://note4ever.com link to your relatives, friends, or co-workers. They can enter the website, and if they have a MetaMask installed then messages will show up in decoded format. They may want to craft a message like yours and send it to Eternity too!
Every message has a clickable Record Number in the header.
Link is leading you to a separate webpage containing only the message you want to show!
In the address bar you could see and copy a web-link to share the message with anyone.
If the receiving party doesn't have MetaMask, or is a hardcore crypto user wishing to see the message decoded outside Note4Ever, you can only give a transaction ID. Receiver can directly look up the message in the chain by any means available.
There are couple of famous services allowing writing data to the blockchain. They work well, but yet look too complicated to certain users. Also, some of them work with insecure or provocative blockchains. The offer of our service is simple: we help you carve your precious message in the rocks of the Ethereum blockchain. There it is supposed to stay forever!
